The broad power granted to the President by the Constitution to show mercy. Includes all forms of executive forgiveness.
Example: A President exercises clemency when granting any form of relief from federal criminal punishment.
Full Forgiveness
Complete forgiveness of the crime. Restores civil rights like voting and holding office. Does NOT erase the conviction from record.
Example: After a pardon, a convicted felon can vote, serve on juries, and no longer faces the legal disabilities of the conviction.
Sentence Reduction
Reduces or eliminates the remaining sentence. The conviction stays on record. Civil rights are NOT automatically restored.
Example: A 20-year sentence commuted to time served allows immediate release, but the person still has a felony record.
